Student Attends Environmental Assessment Training in Italy

Clinton School student Joanna Klak (’10) will participate this week in an environmental assessment training conference in Trento, Italy. The EASY-ECO Training on Strategic Assessment, organized by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of Trento, provides an opportunity for young researchers from around the world to enhance their knowledge and skills in Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), one of the major fields of evaluation of sustainable development.

SEA is a procedure extends the concept of environmental impact assessment into high-level decision making. The purpose of SEA is to recognize and assess potential environmental consequences of plans, program and policy proposals in areas as land use, trade, agriculture, industrial development, transport infrastructure or energy.

Since December 2009, Klak has participated in the e-learning phase of the training. Based on her performance in the first half of the e-course she was awarded with a European Union grant to cover her participation in the on-site training. 

“The knowledge and experience that I gained during an evaluation class taught at the Clinton School by Dr. Al Bavon helped me become one of the most active participants of the e-learning phase” Klak said. “I believe that the EASY-ECO training will provide me with an opportunity to develop practical competences to conduct actual sustainability evaluation projects.”
